The Sarawak territories were greatly expanded under the Brooke dynasty, mostly at the expense of areas nominally under the control of Brunei. His nephew Charles Anthony Johnson Brooke became Rajah after his death he was succeeded on his death in 1917 by his son, Charles Vyner Brooke, with the condition that Charles should rule in consultation with his brother Bertram Brooke. Originally Brooke ruled the territory across the western regions of Sarawak around Kuching until his death in 1868. James Brooke was appointed Rajah by the Sultan of Brunei on 18 August 1842. Sarawak was thus an independent kingdom from 1841 until 1888, when the state was placed under British protection. He effectively became the Rajah of Sarawak and founded the White Rajah Dynasty of Sarawak, later extending his administration through an agreement with the Sultan of Brunei. On 24 September 1841, Pangeran Muda Hashim bestowed the title Governor to James Brooke. Pangeran Muda Hashim signed a treaty in 1841 surrendering Sarawak and Sinian to Brooke. In 1841, Brooke paid another visit to Sarawak and this time he agreed to provide assistance. Pangeran Muda Hashim initially requested assistance in the matter, but Brooke refused. Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin II (1827–1852), the Sultan of Brunei, ordered Pangeran Muda Hashim in 1839 to restore order and it was during this time that James Brooke arrived in Sarawak. During the reign of Pangeran Indera Mahkota in 19th century, Sarawak was facing chaos. By the early 19th century, Sarawak had become a loosely governed territory under the control of the Brunei Sultanate. During the 17th century, Sarawak was self-governed under Sultan Tengah. The area of Sarawak was known to Portuguese cartographers as Cerava. The eastern seaboard of Borneo was charted, though not settled, by the Portuguese in the early 16th century. This is an important and potent alliance. Steve Jobs and Bill Gates agreed to have powerful strategic alliances, whereby the iMacs can also use Microsoft Windows software, and that Mircrosoft would invest $150 million in the ‘new’ Apple Computer company. I can’t articulate how handy this simple piece of leather is. It prevents shadowing on sub-pages and it is also very useful for protecting the clean, unwritten parts of the page by placing the leather under your hand. While its main purpose is to be used as an ink blotter, it can also be used as a writing pad for comfortable writing (fantastic for a coffee shop, library or anywhere on the go). Each set of notebooks comes with this piece of multi-use leather which is cut to the size of the books. I have never, however, told you about one of my favorite features of these notebooks and that is the split leather that in included in each Everyday Book set. There are several blogs prior to this one where I have done just that. I need not take up your time expounding and waxing poetic about my love for Galen’s Everyday Books. Or, if you are Galen Leather, you can innovate, combining the best characteristics of the traditional leather desk set with the portability of sheets of blotter paper. For modern makers, the renewed awareness of the ink blotter offers an opportunity to expand the category. Herbin who has been making them since its inception in 1670, the attention to pen and ink has kept them flush with blotter users for centuries. As fountain pens have made a resurgence and interest in them has increased, the ink blotter is finding its way back onto people’s desks. Which brings us to now and some happy news for the ink blotter. This fine powder was still in use during medieval times when monks were copying manuscripts and even in the 18 th century as a more economical alternative to sprinkling salt on drying ink, a new, more expensive practice of the bourgeoisie. In fact, pounce, made from the bones of cuttlefish has a long history of use for preparing paper prior to writing and also setting paper afterwards. ink made from hide glue, carbon or bone pigment, ground into a paste and then dried in ceramic bowls, was being sprinkled with pounce to avoid smudging on papyrus. If we go back to 400,000 B.C., pigment was already being made in Africa and mixing tools suggest that sand and clay, combined with the sun were being used to dry and fix the ink. The history of the ink blotter is as long as writing with ink itself. Blotting paper is a textured, thick paper specifically made to quickly absorb excess ink. Before blotters were invented, the preferred method was sprinkling salt over fresh written text to speed the drying process. The term ink blotter refers either to a handheld rocking device or simple blotting paper, both used to absorb excess ink when writing with fountain pens. Sadly for me, long gone are the days when having a proper desk set was a symbol of wealth, professionalism or fashion, but one of the tools of the desk set has survived fads and trends to remain: the ink blotter. With my love of fashion, some would say that my past centuries’ sensibilities have to do with the clothing, but those of you who have read my previous articles are probably clued into the thing that most draws me to palaces, country estates and manors: t he desk set. Countless hours spent watching Merchant Ivory movies, every version of Little Women over and over and just about every episode of Masterpiece Theatre have reaffirmed this. I’ve often thought that I was born in the wrong century. He shakes and chatters and screams in the night. Despite his promise to shop for groceries on the mainland, Paul returns only with things that can be purchased at a gas station: graham crackers, peanut butter, instant noodles.Īfter about two weeks on the island, Tuck finds a hidden cache of 82 plastic bags crammed with kratom, an herbal substance with stimulant and hallucinogenic properties. Despite the fact that there is no such thing as kratom withdrawal, Paul, once he stops going to the mainland, begins to experience severe physical symptoms. While they wait for Paul’s return, they consume their meager reserves: brown bread, cheese, a pickle. Adapting easily, Agnes blossoms in the natural environment, propelled by curiosity and wonder. As they learn what it is like to live outside of a city, they can save up to buy their own place in the country. During the day, after Paul leaves for work, Agnes and Tuck explore the island, consulting field guides to name the plants and wildlife they encounter: chanterelles, eelgrass, jackknife clams, hawkweed. The island is meant to offer a pause, allowing Tuck to spend time with Agnes while Paul gets a new job. So, they take what can fit in the car and leave Pittsburgh, eager to spend time on the island until it becomes too cold or her late grandmother’s executor finds out, whichever comes first. I miss you.” - than to question his frequent absences and their rejected credit cards. It is easier to accept Paul’s reasoning - “You’re unhappy. Her grandmother - also named Agnes - lived there, and it was Tuck’s favorite place, though she has not set foot there since she was 15. This neglect and abandonment forced Tuck to become resourceful at an early age and perhaps informs her fervent desire to maintain her own family with husband Paul and daughter Agnes at all costs.Ī week after Tuck’s grandmother dies, Paul proposes that they move to an uninhabited island off the coast of Maine. Her mother left the family when Tuck was a child, and her father left her alone with her younger brother Conrad while she was in high school. Facing a range of natural and manmade dangers, Tuck treats everything, from tides to emails, with a penetrating attention diluted by hunger and exhaustion. “I’M HAVING A hard time keeping track of everything - what should cause dread, and what shouldn’t,” claims Tuck, the protagonist of Meghan Gilliss’s gorgeous and formally innovative debut novel, Lungfish. Then again, Ezra Miller is said to be superb as two different versions of Barry Allen (who share the screen for much of the film’s run-time) in. And you just know that’s got to be lurking somewhere in the dark corners of the MCU writers’ room, a button to be pushed when times get really tough (or several Marvel movies in a row fail to score at least a billion dollars at the box office.) The only issue is that Marvel would no longer have the option in its back pocket of restoring Downey Jr as an alternate reality version of Stark in a future movie. And if you’re going to roar back to the MCU after playing such a huge part in its success, then surely doing so as a high-profile villain – one that’s never been adequately represented on the big screen – would be the perfect resurrection. Or can you? Marvel’s version of the multiverse would certainly allow Downey Jr to appear as Doctor Doom in the forthcoming, Matt Shakman-directed Fantastic Four reboot. Some were hoping to see Tom Cruise as Tony Stark/Iron Man, but you can’t have everything. Marvel already gave us John Krasinski as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic in an alternate version of reality visited by the one-time sorcerer supreme in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, largely because fans had clamoured for the casting. Might this be the latest “almost was” moment to end up morphing into reality, thanks to the multiverse? Probably not, but it’s certainly fun to imagine, and stranger things have no doubt happened in the last five seconds in this brave new era of comic book stunt casting. It’s also possible that taking the role of lead villain in what turned out to be one of the feeblest comic book movies of the era might have scuppered Downey Jr’s career altogether, given the actor’s well-publicised struggles during the period immediately before his casting as Tony Stark. After all, Story’s Johnny Storm/Human Torch, Chris Evans, ended up being cast as Captain America in the MCU, and lasted for many years. It’s not impossible, given how rapidly the Marvel setup was changing in the 00s (from hands-off rights holder in the early part of the decade to fully fledged mini-studio by the end) that Downey Jr might still have wound up taking the role of Iron Man. And, the tail kick will keep your foot from sliding off the back. The diamond grip has ridges on it to keep your foot from moving side to side. That being said, there is enough contrasting texture in this pad to keep you on your board. The downside of all this thinness and comfort is that there’s not as much texture to provide you with crazy, sticky grip. They’re also thin, which gives you solid board feel. We’ve found Channel Island traction pads to be extremely soft and comfortable, both under. Overall, this traction pad’s thinness helps you feel more in control and connected to your board. The thin deck pad lets you maintain board feel as you push through your fins on turns. You won’t feel like you’re standing on a memory foam mattress with this pad. However, our favorite feature of this traction pad was its thinness. The Julian Wilson model has tons of features to help you stay on the board, such as channels and holes throughout for added grip. Developing an awareness of your foot placement according to what you’re trying to do on the wave will help progress your surfing by miles. It’s easier to feel where your back foot is in relation to the board when you can tell your foot is off the traction pad, on the traction pad, or slammed against the raised kick of the pad. Unless you’re a weirdo who likes only using wax, or a Gerry Lopez type who only gets barreled and nothing else, you’ll want something on the back of your board to keep your foot locked in as you push through turns.Īnother less obvious benefit of the traction pad is that it helps with your foot placement. Traction pads, stomp pads, deck pads, tail pads, grip, whatever you want to call them, are an essential piece of equipment for your board. Whenever you have the good fortune to get a new shortboard, you’ll get the pleasure of treating yourself to a brand new traction pad, too (and maybe a leash). LPV approaches are a WAAS/GPS based approach, and they're very similar to the ILS. This eliminates several problems, such as cold temperature effects, incorrectĪltimeter settings, or lack of a local altimeter source, and finally allows approach procedures to be built without the cost of installing ground-based navigation equipment. While WAAS receivers support all basic GPS approach functions, they have the benefit of generating electronic glidepaths, which are independent of ground equipment or barometric aiding. The system effectively increases GPS integrity through real-time monitoring of GPS sources, whereas the accuracy is improved by provided differential corrections from these sources to reduce errors. Beyond providing a correction signal, WAAS provides an additional measurement to your aircraft's receiver. Integrity refers to usability of a satellite signal, and the ability of a system to provide timely warnings to users when WAAS should not be used for navigation as a result of errors or failures in the system. What Is The Extra "Integrity" Provided By WAAS? The information is compatible with the basic GPS signal structure, which means any WAAS-enabled GPS receiver can read the signal.Īll of this happens within a matter of seconds, ensuring the continuous accuracy of your GPS system. The corrected differential message is broadcast through 1 of 2 geostationary satellites, or satellites with a fixed position over the equator. This correction accounts for GPS satellite orbit and clock drift, plus signal delays caused by the atmosphere and ionosphere. The correction message is prepared and uplinked to a geostationary satellite via a ground uplink station. Two master stations, located on either coast, collect data from the reference stations and create a GPS correction message. Connecting the RIGHT readers with the RIGHT books Working for Nintendo since 1991, Martinet started voicing Mario at video game trade shows in which attendees would walk up to a TV screen displaying a 3-D Mario head that was designed to move around the screen and hold full conversations with them. He says that Gremio from William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew was an inspiration for his portrayal of Mario. Martinet has also stated that he kept on talking with his Mario voice until the audition tape ran out. He then thought to himself that it would be too harsh for children to hear, so he made it more soft-hearted and friendly, resulting in what Mario's voice is today. At first Martinet planned to talk like a stereotypical Italian American with a deep, raspy voice. The directors let him audition and told him, "You're an Italian plumber from Brooklyn". Charles Martinet walked in and asked, "Can I please read for this?". He went to the audition at the last minute as the casting directors were already putting away their equipment. Martinet earned the job as Mario's voice at Nintendo when, one day, he was told by his friend that there was going to be an audition at a trade show in which auditioneers "talk to people as a plumber". He went on to become a founding member of the San Jose Repertory Theatre for four years. Upon returning to California he joined the Berkeley Repertory Theatre. After training with the Berkeley Rep for several years, Martinet went to London to attend the Drama Studio London, where among other skills, he discovered his talent for accents and dialects. Įventually, Martinet earned an apprenticeship at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre. His first role was a monologue from the Spoon River Anthology. A friend suggested to him to take acting classes to combat his fear of public speaking. In his senior year, he decided to discontinue his studies after a tutor told him to "regurgitate information he'd written in his book, chapter-by-chapter". Martinet attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he originally intended to study international law. He attended the American School of Paris and graduated in 1974. His family moved to Barcelona when he was 12 years old, and later to Paris. His mother's family had been in the country since the Mayflower voyages, and his father's family had immigrated from France shortly after World War I, in which Charles' grandfather had served. Martinet was born on September 17, 1955, in San Jose, California. He currently resides in the Netherlands with his partner. Martinet, having spent a large portion of his youth in Europe, speaks fluent French and Spanish, as well as some Italian. Martinet is also known for his portrayal of Parthurnaax in 2011's The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, as well as Magenta in 2022's Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. He is also the voice of other characters in the series such as Wario, Waluigi, and their baby equivalents. Charles Martinet ( / ˈ m ɑːr t ɪ n eɪ/, French: born September 17, 1955) is an American actor, who has been portraying both Mario and Luigi in the Super Mario video game series since 1991. |
